Imagine waking up to the call of a peacock, sipping your morning tea while watching elephants bathe in the Ramganga river, and spending your day tracking the Royal Bengal Tiger in its natural habitat. This is the magic of staying at the iconic Dhikala Forest Lodge – the crown jewel of Jim Corbett National Park. Our Dhikala Forest Lodge package offers you the rarest opportunity to spend a night inside the core zone of Corbett, an experience that standard day-trippers can only dream of.
Perched on a hillock overlooking the vast Dhikala Chaur (grassland) and the Ramganga river reservoir, this historic forest rest house has been welcoming wildlife enthusiasts for over a century. With strictly limited permits (only a few dozen guests per night), staying at Dhikala is truly an exclusive privilege. Our package includes expert naturalist guides, multiple jeep safaris, all meals at the lodge, and the highest probability of tiger sightings – Dhikala zone consistently records the maximum tiger encounters in all of Corbett.
Your incredible journey begins early in the morning as you arrive at Ramnagar Railway Station or Bus Stand. Our representative will transfer you to the Dhangari Gate – the entry point for the Dhikala zone. After completing forest permit formalities, you will board your private jeep for a transit safari that takes you deep into the core zone. This 35 km journey through dense Sal forests, along the Ramganga river, is a safari in itself! You will cross Sultan FRH, Gairal Crocodile Point, and climb up to the Dhikala plateau. Keep your camera ready – this route offers incredible wildlife sightings including elephants, crocodiles, deer, and often tigers. You will arrive at Dhikala Forest Lodge by late afternoon. Check into your room (basic forest rest house accommodation with attached bathroom) and immediately head to the famous Dhikala watchtower to witness the breathtaking sunset over the Ramganga reservoir. As darkness falls, enjoy a simple yet delicious dinner at the lodge's communal dining hall, followed by an interactive session with the resident naturalist. Fall asleep to the orchestra of jungle sounds – barking deer alarm calls, rustling leaves, and the distant roar of a tiger.
Wake up before dawn to the melodious calls of jungle birds. At 5:30 AM, enjoy a hot cup of tea/coffee before embarking on your morning jeep safari into the most promising tiger trails of Dhikala zone. Your naturalist will guide you through the vast Dhikala Chaur (grasslands) – the prime hunting ground for tigers. This is the best time for wildlife photography as the soft golden light illuminates the landscape. You may spot tigers on a kill, wild elephants grazing, hog deer sprinting across the meadows, and numerous birds of prey soaring overhead. Return to the lodge by 9:30 AM for a hearty breakfast. The rest of the morning is free for leisure – you can relax on the lodge verandah overlooking the river, read a book, or simply scan the grasslands with binoculars (tigers are often spotted from the lodge itself!). After a simple lunch, you have the option to rest or join a guided nature walk near the lodge (permitted area). In the late afternoon, embark on your evening safari (3:00 PM to 6:00 PM) – another golden window for tiger activity. The evening light casts a magical glow on the grasslands, making it perfect for photography. Return to the lodge as dusk settles, enjoy dinner, and share your day's sightings with fellow travelers around a bonfire (weather permitting). Another night of unforgettable jungle immersion awaits.
One last chance to soak in the magic of Dhikala! Wake up early for your final morning safari – often the most rewarding as tigers are highly active before the heat sets in. Your naturalist will take you to lesser-known trails based on recent pugmark and alarm call activity. After the safari, return to the lodge for a leisurely breakfast. Pack your belongings and check-out from Dhikala by 10:30 AM. You will then board your jeep for the transit safari back to Dhangari Gate – another opportunity to spot wildlife on the way out. Upon reaching the gate, our vehicle will transfer you back to Ramnagar Railway Station or Bus Stand for your onward journey, carrying memories that will last a lifetime.
The Dhikala zone is the largest and most biodiverse zone of Jim Corbett National Park. Our safaris cover the most productive trails known for tiger sightings and scenic beauty.
The entry stretch through dense Sal and mixed forests. High probability of elephant herds and spotted deer. Keep an eye out for tiger pugmarks on the forest road.
Follow the Ramganga river to Gairal. This stretch is famous for Mugger crocodiles and Gharials basking on sandbanks. Also excellent for kingfishers and cormorants.
The highlight of the zone – a vast open grassland surrounded by forests. This is the tiger hotspot of Corbett. Drive slowly along the electric fence trail where tigers often patrol.
Climb the historic watchtower for a panoramic view of the entire Dhikala landscape. The reservoir attracts elephants, deer, and tigers especially in summer. Sunset photography is spectacular here.
Two premium trails branching off from the main Chaur. Sambar Trail is known for tiger sightings during evening. Kothirau Trail offers a more secluded experience with chances of leopard and sloth bear.
For dedicated photographers, we can customize routes focusing on:
Dhikala zone is open from November 15 to June 15. The absolute best time for tiger sightings is April to June (summer) when the heat forces animals to congregate around waterholes. However, temperatures can reach 40°C. For pleasant weather and lush green landscapes, visit in November to February – but tiger sightings may require more patience. Bookings for Dhikala open 45 days in advance and sell out within minutes. We recommend booking at least 2-3 months ahead to secure permits.
Dhikala Forest Lodge is a heritage forest rest house run by the Uttarakhand Forest Department. Accommodation is basic but clean and comfortable. Please note:
Staying inside the core zone comes with strict rules for your safety and the protection of wildlife:
Very competitive. Permits for Dhikala are released by the forest department 45 days in advance and often sell out within 10-15 minutes. As an authorized travel partner, we have a dedicated team that books permits as soon as they open. To secure your stay, we recommend booking at least 2-3 months in advance. Last-minute bookings are almost impossible.
Very high – over 90% for a 2-night stay. Dhikala zone is famous for having the highest tiger density in Corbett. Our experienced naturalists know the terrain, trails, and tiger behavior intimately. With multiple safaris over 2 days, your chances of seeing a tiger are excellent. However, wildlife sightings can never be 100% guaranteed.
Dhikala is not recommended for elderly people with mobility issues or children under 8 years. The jeep safari on bumpy forest roads can be physically demanding. Additionally, medical facilities are limited inside the core zone. For families with young children or seniors, we recommend our resort-based packages which offer more comfort and easy access to medical help.
Please pack light and smart. Essential items include: neutral-colored clothing (khaki, olive, brown – no bright colors or whites), warm layers for winter mornings/evenings, comfortable closed shoes, binoculars, camera with extra batteries (charging limited), power bank, flashlight/torch, personal medications, sunscreen & hat (summer), and mosquito repellent. Pack all this in one soft-sided bag per person (hard suitcases are difficult to fit in jeeps).
Yes, only vegetarian meals are served at Dhikala Forest Lodge as per forest department rules. The food is simple, hygienic, and home-style – including rice, dal, vegetables, roti, and seasonal fruits. Non-vegetarian food and alcohol are strictly prohibited inside the core zone. If you have specific dietary requirements (Jain, vegan, gluten-free), please inform us at the time of booking.
